Most people think that vegetables need a lot of sunlight to grow. There are vegetables that grow even without full sunlight. There is a basic thumb rule to follow. If you are growing a plant that bears fruits and vegetables, then it needs full sunlight to grow.
However, if you are growing plants for its leaves, then it will grow even without the sun. But, it should not be complete dense shade. There should be partial sunlight if not direct sunlight. For example, a spot under the tree will be just fine where partial sunlight reaches it. So, it basically means that spot is getting about three to six hours of sunlight and that is about all.
